Commemorating the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Children of Sarajevo, a special program was held at the Memorial to the murdered children of the besieged city from 1992-1995 on May 5.
The event in Sarajevo saw participation from students of primary and secondary schools in the Canton of Sarajevo. Members of the Association of Parents of Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo, the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić, the delegation of the Sarajevo Canton Government, and other representatives joined in laying flowers to honor the victims.
During the siege of Sarajevo, 1,601 children lost their lives, making it one of the most tragic events in modern warfare history. Fikret Grabovica, president of the Association of Parents of Murdered Children, highlighted the atrocities committed against these innocent children.
According to Grabovica, the children were targeted in various situations, including while they were at school, home, or even playing outside during brief moments of peace. The memorial serves as a reminder of the brutal aggression faced by Bosnia and Herzegovina during that time and the ongoing struggle for justice and remembrance.
Grabovica urged the youth to educate themselves and be aware of the past to prevent such tragedies from happening again. He emphasized the importance of spreading love and creating a better future for all.
The Government of Sarajevo Canton designated May 5 as the official Day of Remembrance for the Murdered Children of Sarajevo. This year, the Ministry of Education organized the event to pay tribute to the victims.
Despite the passage of time, the families of the victims continue to seek justice for their lost loved ones. The siege of Sarajevo, lasting for 1,425 days, left a lasting impact on the city and its inhabitants.
