Uncovering the Wheat Import Scandal: Interior Minister Naqvi Raises Eyebrows
Recently, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi made a bold claim, stating that certain individuals are pushing for an investigation against him and former caretaker prime minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar in the wheat import scandal. This revelation has sent shockwaves through Pakistan, shedding light on the controversial import of 3.4 million metric tons of wheat by the caretaker government.
The controversy surrounding Pakistan’s wheat sector has escalated, with accusations of corruption and irregularities marring the import process. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took decisive action by establishing a fact-finding committee to investigate the questionable import, which occurred despite a surplus ‘bumper crop’. This excessive stock led to Balochistan and Punjab governments being unable to procure wheat from local farmers, causing prices to plummet below the official rate.
The blame for the surplus stock has been attributed to the Kakar-led caretaker government, which permitted the import of a staggering 2,758,226 metric tonnes of wheat until February 2024. While initial reports suggested that Naqvi and Kakar were summoned for inquiry, the committee head later refuted these claims, sparking further speculation and controversy.
In response to the accusations, former caretaker premier Anwaarul Haq Kakar defended himself by emphasizing that overseeing wheat production is not within the purview of a prime minister’s duties. He highlighted the devolution of responsibilities under the 18th amendment, placing the onus on provincial governments to manage wheat procurement effectively.
Kakar dismissed his involvement in the crisis, urging constructive dialogue and accountability among all stakeholders. He pointed out that it is the federal government’s responsibility to address the issue, while stressing the need for provincial governments to step up and fulfill their obligations.
