Milei: Malvinas not a priority
The Libertarian leader praised Thatcher and stressed that the Falklands/Malvinas matter will be a long-term State issue
Argentine President Javier Milei has made headlines by praising former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and acknowledging that the Falkland Islands rightfully remain under British rule.
In an interview with the BBC, Milei stated, “If that territory is now in the hands of the United Kingdom, it has a right to do so. I don’t see it as a provocation.”
While not seeking conflict with the United Kingdom, Milei expressed a desire for a long-term negotiation process regarding the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.
Milei emphasized the need for an “adult discussion” between the two countries and suggested that the return of the Malvinas Islands to Argentina would require time and dialogue.
When asked about his view on Margaret Thatcher as a statesperson, Milei defended her and praised her brilliance, stating, “There was a war and we lost. That does not mean that one cannot consider that those who were in front of us were people who did their job well.”
Milei also addressed the conflict between Israel and Gaza, expressing support for Israel’s right to self-defense and defending his decision to move the Argentine embassy in Israel to West Jerusalem.
Overall, Milei emphasized that the Falklands/Malvinas issue is not his administration’s main priority and should be understood as a long-term State issue that requires time and diplomatic efforts.
