Kataeb Hezbollah Calls for US Troops to Leave Iraq
On Tuesday, Iraq’s Kataeb Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran and part of the Axis of Resistance, reiterated its demand for US troops to withdraw from Iraq. The group had previously suspended attacks against American forces but now claims that the US has not shown seriousness in removing its troops and spy bases from the country.
Despite ongoing talks between Washington and Baghdad regarding the presence of US troops in Iraq as part of an anti-jihadist coalition, Kataeb Hezbollah remains firm in its stance. The United States, which considers the group as “terrorist,” has targeted its operations in recent strikes.
Following heightened tensions in the region, including attacks on US troops, Kataeb Hezbollah temporarily halted its attacks in late January. Talks between the US and Iraq resumed in February to discuss the future of the US-led coalition’s mission in Iraq, with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani advocating for an end to the coalition’s presence. As the international coalition continues its fight against the Islamic State group, the situation remains tense in Iraq.
