Enhancing Defense Capabilities: Iraq-France Partnership
In a bid to strengthen its armed forces, Iraq is seeking effective partnerships with French companies. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani recently expressed his country’s openness to collaboration, especially in modernizing military technology.
During a meeting with French Ambassador Eric Chevalier, Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of bolstering Iraq’s defensive capabilities through strategic alliances. The discussions included plans to promote bilateral ties and enhance the country’s sovereignty.
One notable contract that was highlighted during the meeting was with the French company Thales. This agreement signifies a step towards modernizing Iraq’s military technology and equipment.
France has shown a keen interest in supporting Iraq’s defense efforts, particularly after the completion of the international coalition’s mission. The French Minister of the Armed Forces, Sebastien Lecornu, reaffirmed France’s commitment to assisting Iraq in securing its airspace using the latest technologies.
Discussions with Thales Group regarding the GM400 radar have been ongoing, with both parties aiming to further strengthen Iraq’s defense capabilities. The potential supply of radars, Rafale aircraft, and military helicopters was also explored during a meeting between Al-Sudani and representatives of Thales Group, Dassault Group, and Airbus.
In a show of cooperation, the Iraqi and French air forces conducted joint exercises last May, featuring the participation of Rafale aircraft. This partnership highlights the shared commitment to enhancing defense capabilities and fostering strong ties between the two countries.
