Countries around the world are implementing age verification systems to address the alarming effects of early access to pornography on minors. Spain is currently developing its own tool which is expected to launch by the end of summer. The average age at which young people in Spain start watching online porn is just eight years old, according to the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD).
Multiple methods are being used to verify a user’s age before accessing adult content, including credit card verification, identity card requests, and facial recognition systems. However, these methods raise concerns about user privacy and data security.
In France, a new age verification system is being tested that aims to respect user anonymity. This innovative approach involves a digital intermediary that prevents the verification service from accessing personal data. This system, developed in collaboration with the National Commission for Informatics and Liberties (CNIL), offers a more secure and privacy-friendly alternative to traditional verification methods.
Although no system is perfect, the French model shows promise in protecting user data and ensuring online privacy. As discussions around age verification continue, it’s essential to prioritize both child safety and user privacy in the digital landscape.
