Nijjar, a vocal advocate for an independent Sikh homeland and the president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, was fatally shot in his pickup truck while leaving the Surrey temple’s parking lot last June.
In September, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau informed the House of Commons that credible intelligence pointed towards the Indian government’s involvement in the killing, a claim that India denies. Police have mentioned that investigations are ongoing to establish any potential connection to the Indian government.
Nijjar played a significant role in organizing unofficial referendums for an independent Sikh state in India and was labeled as a terrorist by the Indian government.
