Exciting news for students from Sarajevo! Recently, they participated in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) in Varna, Bulgaria and achieved remarkable success, landing in fourth place overall. This impressive accomplishment places them just behind Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria.
The team from Bosnia and Herzegovina, clinching the fourth spot, matched their previous best ranking from 2017. Harun Alibegović from Richmond Park Secondary School Sarajevo snagged a silver medal, while Ahmed Spahić and Benjamin Mujkić from JU Druga Gimnazija Sarajevo each secured a bronze medal. Additionally, Abdullah Fehratbegović from Richmond Park Secondary School received a special award for his outstanding performance.
The success of these talented mathematicians did not go unnoticed. Chairman of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly Elvedin Okerić, Minister of Education Naida Hota-Muminović, and Director of the Institute for the Development of Pre-University Education Senada Salihović recently honored them with a special reception. They were joined by team leader Zenan Šabanac and Professor Senada Kalabušić.
During the event, they also discussed the upcoming Balkan Mathematical Olympiad in 2025, which will take place in Sarajevo. The Sarajevo Canton Government expressed its full support for the event, which will be co-organized by the KS Mathematicians Association.
Minister Hota-Muminović commended the KS Mathematicians Association for their hard work and dedication, expressing her delight at the team’s achievements. “Our brilliant mathematicians have once again made us proud with their outstanding performance. Bringing home a silver medal, two bronze medals, and a commendation from the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad is a significant achievement for Sarajevo. These students, along with their leaders, teachers, and parents, serve as an inspiration by demonstrating the importance of commitment and hard work in achieving success. We will continue to support our students in their journey towards excellence, and we eagerly anticipate hosting the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad in 2025,” the Minister stated.
