Uruguay’s Health Ministry has introduced the “Mosquito Alert” app, encouraging the population to actively participate in the fight against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito responsible for transmitting dengue, zika, and chikungunya.

The app allows users to identify and report mosquito breeding sites by submitting photos from their cell phones. This information helps authorities take targeted measures to eradicate the mosquito populations. Health Minister Karina Rando described the app as a “milestone” in the battle against mosquito-borne diseases, empowering citizens to contribute to vector control efforts.

Rando highlighted Uruguay’s tech-savvy culture, emphasizing the potential impact of widespread app usage in mapping and addressing mosquito breeding sites across the country. The app, originally developed in Spain and funded by the European Union and the Spanish government, has been tailored for use in Uruguay through diplomatic collaboration.

Spanish Ambassador Santiago Jiménez Martín underscored the embassy’s support for the program, highlighting the role of scientific diplomacy in combating public health threats. The “Mosquito Alert” app is available for Android and iOS devices, enabling easy access for smartphone users.

Recent data shows a decline in new dengue cases in Uruguay, attributed to the changing weather conditions. Rando cautioned against complacency, urging vigilance as warmer temperatures could lead to a resurgence in mosquito-borne illnesses.
