School cancels action against student for fee complaints at EFF meeting

Laudium Secondary School found itself in hot water when it charged a Grade 9 pupil for allegedly bringing its name into disrepute after she disclosed the school’s monthly fees at an EFF meeting. The incident, captured on Google Maps in 2022, sparked controversy and led to public scrutiny.

A planned disciplinary hearing was averted when an EFF representative stepped in to support the pupil. Laudium Secondary School, located near Pretoria, had accused Grade 9 student, Feerozah Ismail, of tarnishing the school’s reputation by revealing at an EFF townhall on 21 April that the monthly Sassa grant was R530, while the school’s monthly fees were R1,200 despite being a government institution.

In her statement at the meeting held at the Laudium Civic Centre and attended by EFF leader Julius Malema, Ismail questioned the value of the fees in relation to the quality of education provided. Her bold remarks raised critical questions about transparency and accountability in education funding.
