PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan has recently made some bold statements regarding the election of independent candidates as senators, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. He described this practice as a “continuation of the hybrid system” during an interview on Dawn News program Doosra Rukh.

Khan expressed his concerns about the consequences of electing independent members, suggesting that it reflects the weaknesses of the current government. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of the people and providing relief amidst challenging economic conditions.

Despite acknowledging the decision to support independents taken by PML-N leadership, Khan highlighted the potential risks associated with deviating from the constitutional path. He warned that those attempting to undermine the Constitution will face accountability in due time.

Reflecting on the impact of the hybrid system on politics, Khan addressed the issue of independents becoming senators. He questioned the legitimacy of such appointments within the existing system and noted the challenges presented by operating within a hybrid framework.

While acknowledging internal disagreements within his party regarding the support for independents, Khan defended the decision made by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He speculated on the potential consequences of not supporting independents, suggesting that it could have exacerbated economic challenges and fuelled further instability.
