Jaishankar: Canada Incidents Stem from Internal Politics

India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, recently addressed the escalating tensions in Canada over the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, attributing it to internal politics rather than any issues with India.

Jaishankar’s comments came in response to inquiries about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s criticism of India.

During a discussion with senior journalists, Jaishankar emphasized the need for a strong, proactive leader like Narendra Modi to implement further reforms across various sectors, including external affairs, to propel India towards becoming a more developed nation.

He pointed out that India’s global reputation has significantly improved, with leaders from various countries acknowledging and praising the nation and its Prime Minister.

Furthermore, Jaishankar highlighted how certain pro-Khalistan groups in Canada have exploited the country’s democratic system to advance their agenda, posing challenges for both Canada and India.

He also noted that the ruling party in Canada lacks a parliamentary majority and relies on pro-Khalistan figures for support.

Despite India’s efforts to dissuade Canada from harboring such individuals, Jaishankar expressed disappointment over the Canadian government’s lack of action, particularly in response to extradition requests related to pro-Khalistan activists.

The strained relationship between India and Canada intensified following Trudeau’s baseless allegations implicating Indian agents in Nijjar’s death, a claim India promptly refuted.

Jaishankar attributed Canada’s unfounded accusations to political expediency, particularly in the lead-up to elections, where anti-India sentiments are used to garner votes.

He underscored the widespread admiration for Indian Prime Minister Modi among numerous global leaders, citing instances where world leaders have praised and acknowledged Modi’s leadership.

Addressing concerns about regional tensions, Jaishankar affirmed India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, especially from neighboring countries like Pakistan.

He emphasized the Modi government’s commitment to safeguarding national security and responding effectively to any threats, as evidenced by decisive actions following incidents like Uri and Balakot.

Jaishankar also addressed border disputes with China and underscored India’s preparedness to counter any provocations along the Line of Actual Control.

Regarding Nepal’s recent move to print currency notes featuring disputed territories with India, Jaishankar asserted that such actions would not alter the ground realities.

He further mentioned instances of Indian citizens being victims of cyber fraud and forced labor in countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Russia, with the Indian government actively working to address these issues.

Jaishankar assured that the government remains vigilant and responsive to protect Indian citizens abroad, especially those trapped in exploitative situations.

In conclusion, Jaishankar reiterated India’s firm stance on national security and its commitment to safeguarding the interests of its citizens around the world.
