Israel presents Gaza post-war plan amid conflict

Imagine a future where Israel and a coalition of Arab nations, including the United States, share control over Gaza in a groundbreaking power-sharing deal. According to officials cited by the New York Times, this could be a possibility after the conflict with Hamas in Gaza comes to an end.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains tight-lipped about the details of Gaza’s post-war future, behind the scenes, an expansive plan is being developed. The proposal involves Israel offering to share oversight of Gaza with the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates in exchange for a normalization of ties with Saudi Arabia.

Under this plan, local leaders in Gaza would be appointed by Israel and the Arab nations, in collaboration with Washington, to rebuild the territory, reform its education system, and maintain order. After seven to ten years, the people in Gaza would have the opportunity to vote on whether to join a united Palestinian administration controlling both the West Bank and Gaza.

It’s important to note that the plan does not specify if this united administration would constitute a sovereign Palestinian state. Despite this, the proposal allows the Israel Defense Forces to continue operating within Gaza after the conflict with Hamas ends.

The New York Times report comes at a crucial time when international efforts are underway to broker a ceasefire and pave the way for a lasting peace in Gaza. The region has been plagued by violence, with thousands of Palestinians losing their lives and many more wounded in the conflict.
