The world was in turmoil, and for Nora, it hit home unexpectedly. Born in California after her family was forced to flee Gaza due to the Israeli occupation, she found herself torn as Israel began bombing the homeland of her parents. Though she hadn’t been to Gaza in 20 years, the devastation hit close to her heart as she watched her family suffer. Witnessing the tragedy from a distance, Nora felt compelled to take action. While visiting a friend in Mexico, she stumbled upon a significant protest camp set up by students at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), taking a stand against the atrocities in Gaza.

The fervor of the U.S. student uprisings against the Gaza bombings inspired the students at UNAM to raise their voices in solidarity. Setting up a camp on May 2, their demands echoed those of their counterparts in the United States, calling for an end to the genocide and a break-off of ties with Israel. Nora, sensing a connection to her roots, joined the protest with a sense of purpose.

As the protest gained momentum, the eyes of the world turned towards Mexico and the growing student movement. The camp at UNAM was a symbol of resistance, challenging the status quo and demanding justice for the oppressed. Nora, clad in traditional attire, stood strong alongside her peers, pushing for change in the face of adversity.

“No alcohol, no joints, no drugs, no sex”

The protest camp buzzed with activity as students outlined their objectives and organized themselves into brigades to manage security, outreach, and media relations. Their mission was clear: to end the bloodshed in Gaza and hold accountable those complicit in the violence. Despite facing daunting challenges, the students remained resolute, spurred on by a shared vision of a better world.

The UNAM protest camp was a beacon of hope in a tumultuous world, a testament to the power of collective action and the resilience of the human spirit. As the students stood firm in their resolve, Nora found a renewed sense of purpose, a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos. Together, they marched towards a brighter tomorrow, one where justice and peace prevail.
