Resuming Talks to Halt the War in Gaza
As talks are set to resume in Egypt aimed at ending months of conflict in Gaza between Hamas militants and Israel, tensions continue to rise around the world. Mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have been waiting for a response from Hamas regarding a proposed ceasefire that could bring an end to the fighting for 40 days and involve the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

Following a recent meeting in Cairo, the Hamas delegation returned to Qatar to discuss the truce proposal with their leader, Ismail Haniyeh. The war broke out after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel in October resulting in the deaths of over 1,170 people, mostly civilians. In retaliation, Israel has conducted a campaign of bombardment and ground fighting that has claimed the lives of at least 34,654 people in Gaza, mostly women and children.

The World Health Organization estimates that 1.2 million people, half of Gaza’s population, have sought refuge in Rafah. As concerns over a potential full-scale military operation in Rafah intensify, aid groups warn that it could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.
