Emigration has opened up new political opportunities for Hongkongers, with a former district councillor recently winning a seat on the Wokingham Borough Council in the UK. Andy Ng Siu-hong’s victory in the Maiden Erlegh and Whitegates ward marks a significant achievement for both him and the Liberal Democrats, who secured 27 out of 54 seats in the Wokingham election.

Ng expressed his gratitude for the support he received and emphasized the importance of Hongkongers participating in British politics. He highlighted the successful integration of Hongkongers into British society, further stating that shared values were key in his election success.

Ng’s journey from a former Democratic Party member in Hong Kong to a local councillor in the UK showcases the impact of political migration. After resigning in 2021, Ng and his family moved to Reading, England, as part of the UK’s response to the Beijing-imposed national security law.

In a similar success story, Ying Perrett, also from the Liberal Democrats, won a seat in the Surrey Heath Borough Council last year. Perrett’s election marked a significant milestone as the first Hongkonger under the BN(O) visa scheme to secure a seat in a local UK authority.

The success of candidates like Ng and Perrett underscores the changing landscape of British politics, with more diverse voices contributing to local governance. As the UK navigates through political challenges, the inclusion of Hongkongers in its political framework reflects a broader trend towards global citizenship and collaboration.
