Canada detains Indians accused of murdering Sikh activist — RT India

Recently, authorities have launched an investigation into New Delhi’s alleged involvement in the death of a separatist leader labeled as a “terrorist” by the Indian government.

In a significant development, Canada has detained three Indian citizens in connection with the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist known as a “terrorist” by New Delhi. Nijjar was a key figure advocating for the establishment of Khalistan, an independent nation envisioned in India’s Punjab state and its surrounding regions.

The suspects, namely Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, had been residing as non-permanent residents in Alberta, Canada for a few years before their arrest. They are set to be transferred to British Columbia to face charges related to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Interestingly, Canadian authorities state that these individuals were not previously under suspicion before the incident.

During a briefing, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Assistant Commissioner David Teboul mentioned that investigations into Nijjar’s murder were ongoing, with a focus not only on the arrested individuals but also on potential links to the Indian government.

The fatal shooting of the separatist leader at a Sikh temple parking lot in British Columbia last year triggered a diplomatic clash between New Delhi and Ottawa. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hinted at possible involvement of Indian agents in the killing, leading to the expulsion of diplomats and a temporary halt in visa services for Canadians by the Indian government.

Despite India’s denial of any involvement in the assassination, Trudeau expressed his intent to “put a chill” on India with his public accusations. New Delhi has vehemently refuted these claims and demanded concrete evidence from Canada to support its allegations. Additionally, India has accused Canada and other Western nations of sheltering terrorists and providing a platform for anti-India elements.

The recent arrest of the alleged perpetrators follows Trudeau’s participation in an event where activists were heard chanting pro-Khalistan slogans. In response, India summoned the Canadian deputy high commissioner to voice its concerns.

As the investigation unfolds and tensions persist between the two nations, the ramifications of this incident on diplomatic relations and political dynamics remain to be seen.
